Art Gallery - Special Exhibitions Gallery Hire

The Lakes District Museum Special Exhibition’s Gallery, of 40 running metres of wall space, has displayed a wide array of exhibitions since opening in 1992. The museum attracts 46 000 people each year, while the peak summer months bring in around 6 000 visitors each month.

Special Exhibitions Gallery Conditions of Rental

For the purpose of this agreement, the hirer of the gallery shall be referred to as ‘The Artist’. The Artist can be a group of artists having a joint exhibition. The gallery may also be hired by commercial hirers, for example dealer galleries. They are referred to as ‘Commercial Hirers’ in this agreement.

Rental costs for The Artist are as follows

  • $500 per month
  • Or $200 for the first week and $100 for each of the following weeks
  • Or 30% commission on sold works, whatever is the greater. (Note: Commission includes all credit card fees)

Rental costs for the Commercial Hirers are $1000 per month

  • Or $400 for the first week and $200 for each of the following weeks
  • Or 30% commission on sold works, whatever is the greater. (Note: Commission includes all credit card fees)

Security

All reasonable care will be taken by the Museum. However, no responsibility is accepted. Insurance, both in transit and during the exhibition, is the responsibility of the artist/commercial hirer. The cost of transit of an exhibition is also the responsibility of the artist/hirer.


Hours

The museum hours are detailed on the Contact Us page. Generally, the special exhibitions gallery has free admission, but there may be a charge for special exhibitions. Museum staff are in attendance and will administer the purchases of works.


Display

All works submitted must meet the standards required by the Museum Director and the Gallery Committee. The Director and Gallery Committee will make the arrangements to hang the works in conjunction with the Artist/Commercial Hirer. In general, two days are allowed for this purpose. The museum has display plinths that can be used for at no charge. The museum will prepare works for postage, both in New Zealand and overseas, with the cost being met by the purchaser.


Advertising

Advertising costs, e.g. invitations, catalogues, posters, are to be met by the Artist/Commercial Hirer. The Museum will advertise in their newsletter and website and make contact with the news media.


Food and Beverage

The cost of any opening expense is to be met by the Artist/Commercial Hirer. White wine, juice, tea, coffee and finger food items which are easily handled are acceptable. Glasses are available from the Museum for a small cleaning fee. Members of the Gallery Committee may be available to assist at opening functions at prior arrangement with the Museum Director.
